This is actually another galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. The LMC is an irregular galaxy that is gravitationally bound to the Milky Way. It can be seen with the naked eye from the EarthΓÇÖs Southern Hemisphere. Although much smaller than the Milky Way, the LMC contains millions of stars and clouds of gas and dust where stars are forming.
